about

Sound and Music (Vol. 1) is a wide-ranging collection of tracks donated by alumni from our programmes, including everyone from Summer School students through to professional composers.

The album is a testament to the breadth of work supported by Sound and Music with everything from sonic art by Jobina Tinnemans and electronica from Seán Clancy and Sam Salem, to vocal works by Michael Betteridge and Claudia Molitor and instrumental works by Marc Yeats and Ailís Ní Ríain. Plus there's film scores from some of our Summer School students and tracks weaving in field recordings from Jez riley French and Supriya Nagarajan. Each track has been donated by an artist whose own artistic journey has been supported by Sound and Music, and all of the profits from the sale of the album will go straight back into our work supporting composers to realise their full potential.

Over the past year, the cultural sector – and freelance artists in particular – have had to face some immense challenges as a result of COVID-19. At Sound and Music, we know there were already many existing barriers to a fulfilling artistic career, and that these have been compounded by the effects of the pandemic. This means that our work developing the creative voices of the future is now more essential than ever.

Thanks to the immense generosity of the artists involved, we’re able to release this wonderfully eclectic album that not only showcases just some of the fantastic artists we have worked with, but also helps us raise funds to maximise opportunities for people to create and enjoy new music.

Composer Michael Betteridge, whose choral piece the sunday boys features on the album, said:

“Without Sound and Music I do wonder where I would be today as a composer. The many schemes I've been involved with have not only helped me develop my compositional voice and expand my network, but allowed me to really interrogate who I am as an artist and why I do what I do, as well as giving me space to take risks and experiment. I hope this project demonstrates the diversity of artists Sound and Music work with and allows them to support many more in the years to come.”

Please note track 6 includes mild swearing.
